Back for Another Arts Show

I had so much fun at last year’s Habitat for Humanity Recycled Arts Show, I joined the planning committee for this year’s! Having worked as an event planner / fundraiser for the Southwest Land Alliance, I know firsthand how much work is involved in planning an event and how valuable good volunteers can be. That’s why I jumped in this year and created the event poster, solicited donations for the silent auction, helped research venues, will be bar tending at the Artists’ Meet & Greet and showing my work selling my work to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Archuleta County.

This year’s show is April 24-26 and located downtown next to Dorothy’s Restaurant. Here’s a breakdown of planned activities:

Thursday, April 24 PREVIEW
Open to the public from noon-6pm
FREE, donations welcome
No sales – preview auction items and art

Friday, April 25 GALLERY OPENING & MEET THE ARTISTS
$25 per person, 6-9pm
Silent auction to close at 8:30pm
Art for sale, beer, wine, appetizers and live music

Saturday, April 26 3RD ANNUAL RECYCLED ARTS SHOW
Open to the public from 10am-4pm
FREE, donations welcome
Art for sale

My bottle cap artwork was well received last year, selling 2 of the 3 pieces. I started to think about other things I could create that may not be as physically demanding—I smash the caps with a hammer then nail them to plywood. That idea, coupled with brainstorming a poster design led me to the creation of these flower arrangements.

As usual, I have a bunch more ideas on the drawing board but haven’t found enough time to create them all! Come check out the show, and join me in supporting Habitat’s mission of “Building Houses & Hope in Archuleta County.”

Habitat for Humanity Recycled Arts Show

This is a new and different kind of “graphic design” for me. Tomorrow night, April 19th, I’ll be debuting as an artist at the 2nd Annual Recycled Arts Show benefiting Habitat for Humanity at the old antique store located next to CarQuest in downtown Pagosa. Friday night from 6pm–9pm is the gallery opening and Meet the Artists Event. Tickets are $20. Then Saturday the gallery is open to the public for free from 11am–4pm.

When hubby and I spent our 10 year anniversary in New Orleans, I saw some really neat fish sculptures made from bottle caps. Last year I finished my first piece the ‘Wild Salmon’, and this spring I saw a call for artists in the paper for the Habitat Art Show. Turned out to be a great fit and spurred me on to finish off two more pieces. I’ve got big ideas to continue some of these in a series and do larger, 3-D, free-standing pieces using more than just caps. Hopefully this is just the start of a new adventure!

Chris and I met Mark Dudrow at The Four Corners Folk Festival where he has been a vendor, selling his handmade tile paintings, for years. I think our first major purchase of his artwork was one of his Banjo Ascension pieces. Since then, it’s like an addiction, collecting his artwork.

In 2010 Mark approached me to help finalize the artwork he and Justin Dean had created for their album ‘High Desert Acoustic Duo.’ We launched the album with the new year at the Adobe Bar in the Taos Inn.

I suggested to Mark that it would be fun if he could create a custom piece of artwork featuring our volkswagens, and I would work on creating a new website for him. I sent him several photos of the volkswagens—which is all he’s ever seen of our ’63 square back as it’s still in restoration and needs an engine. We drove the ’58 single cab to his studio during the 2011 Rio Costilla Studio Tours to pick up the custom creations.

And let me say, Mark way outdid himself. They are awesome paintings of our volkswagens in front of the Taos Inn and Ranchos de Taos church. As we drove into Jaroso that day, people laughed and waved (more than they usually do when we drive the single cab) because they recognized the truck from the painting.

Keeping my part of the bargain, I’m happy to finally announce the launch of Mark’s new website. There are plans to continue developing it to include e-commerce for him to sell his artwork and music online.
